Online Shopping - The Gender Imbalance

A recently published PayPal report on online consumer trends has some relevance for in-line retailers. The growth of online shopping might not be such a threat, and in fact, might be an opportunity.

This PayPal report from the UK directly states why online shopping and e-commerce are not direct threats to traditional in-line retailers. Men are driving most of the growth in online shopping. And, men are largely purchasing products that are no longer associated with commercial district or shopping mall retail models, namely electronics and games. Apparel retailers serving women have always been the backbone of the Mall retail model and are also the most coveted tenants in urban commercial districts. Women will continue to patronize physical stores for most of their apparel needs. But retailers looking to broaden their appeal toward male shoppers can add internet based specials for electronics, games and accessories in order to create sales from a hard to tap group.
